Hungarian grammar #4

daily_magyar_07_16
In Hungarian we have two letters for the same phoneme, they are ‘j’ and ‘ly’.

‘j’ is called jé
ly‘ is called ellipszilon, like L Ipszilon (L Y)

They are now both pronounced as ‘y’ in the English word ‘yes’, but in the past ‘ly’ was used for the phoneme ‘ʎ’.

..one of the few words that contain both letters is:::
rejtély – mystery

°

Sometimes the combination of the letters ‘L’ and ‘J’ (when J follows L) also sounds as ‘j’, but rather a long ‘j’, like:::

teljes – complete
[pronounced as ‘tejjes’]

beljebb – more inside; more inward; more into something
[pronounced as ‘bejjebb’]
be – in; into; inward

Though some people tend to pronounce the words with ‘LJ’ the way that they pronounce the letters ‘L’ and ‘J’ on their own. So they pronounce ‘teljes’ as ‘tel jes’, not as ‘tejjes’,

° °

In order to be perfect at grammar, you have to know where to write ‘j’ and where to write ‘ly’, also where to write ‘lj’ and where to write ‘jj’. So.. you have to learn where to write what 😛 😀
