liszterzekeny
– Abbahagyná a gyerek a zongorázást? Kezdek Lisztérzékeny lenni.
– Would the kid stop playing the piano? I’m getting Liszt-sensitive.

The word “lisztérzékeny” in fact means “coeliac” – a person with coeliac disease, but in this joke they are referring to the famous Hungarian composer, Liszt Ferenc (Franz Liszt) and the man’s big dislike against classical music.

Gyöngyhajú lány

Last night I was on the after-party of a Russian-Czech Quiz evening and we talked about the old Hungarian band: Omega.
..then somebody started playing the ‘Gyöngyhajú lány’ on the HiFi and a Czech and a Belarusian guy immediately started to sing the song, in Hungarian. 🙂
..the Belarus guy told me that back in the Soviet Union the Hungarian bands and their songs were the only songs they could get from the West. His mother had a lot of vinyls of Hungarian songs and he used to listen to them a lot as a kid. He doesn’t speak Hungarian, but had a really good pronounciation while singing the song. It was a really good experience and feeling seeing all those non-Hungarians singing the song, with such emotions! 🙂

..so I thought I would translate the song into English as close to the Hungarian lyrics as possible:::
gyongyhaju_lany

Egyszer a nap | Once the Sun
Úgy elfáradt, | Got so tired,
Elaludt mély, | That it fell asleep on that deep
Zöld tó ölén, | Green lake’s lap.
Az embereknek | The people
Fájt a sötét, | Were in pain because of the darkness,
Ő megsajnált, | She pitied us
Eljött közénk – | and came among us.

Igen, jött egy gyöngyhajú lány, | Yes, there came a girl with pearl-hair
Álmodtam, vagy igaz talán, | Was I dreaming, or maybe it was real,
Így lett a föld, az ég | This is how the earth and the sky
Zöld meg kék, mint rég, | Became green and blue like in the old days.
Igen, jött egy gyöngyhajú lány, | Yes, there came a girl with pearl-hair
Álmodtam, vagy igaz talán – | Was I dreaming, or maybe it was real –

A hajnal kelt, | The dawn woke up,
Ő hazament, | She went home,
Kék hegy mögé, | To behind the blue mountain,
Virág közé, | To between the flower(s).
Kis kék elefánt | Little blue elephant
Mesét mesélt, | Was telling a fairy tale,
Szép gyöngyhaján | On her beautiful pearl-hair
Alszik a fény. | The light is (already) sleeping.

Igen, él egy gyöngyhajú lány, | Yes, there lives a girl with pearl-hair
Álmodtam, vagy igaz talán, | Was I dreaming, or maybe it was real,
Gyöngyhaj azóta rég | The pearl-hair since that
Mély tengerbe ért, | Has reached the sea.
Igen, él egy gyöngyhajú lány, | Yes, there lives a girl with pearl-hair
Álmodtam, vagy igaz talán – | Was I dreaming, or maybe it was real –

Mikor nagyon | When you are
Egyedül vagy, | Very alone,
Lehull hozzád | Falls down to you
Egy kis csillag, | A little star,
Hófehér gyöngyök | Snow white pearls
Vezessenek, | May guide you,
Mint jó vándort | Like a wanderer (is guided be)
Fehér kövek – | The white stones –

Igen, ébredj, gyöngyhajú lány | Yes, wake up, girl with pearl-hair
Álmodtam, vagy igaz talán | Was I dreaming, or maybe it was real,
Ránk vár gyöngye mögött | She is waiting for us behind her pearls
Ég és föld között | Between sky and earth.

Igen, hív, egy gyöngyhajú lány, | Yes, there calls, a girl with pearl-hair
Álmodtam, vagy igaz talán, | Was I dreaming, or maybe it was real,
Rám vár gyöngye mögött, | She is waiting for me behind her pearls
Ég és föld között, | Between sky and earth.
Igen, hív, egy gyöngyhajú lány, | Yes, there calls, a girl with pearl-hair
Álmodtam, vagy igaz talán, — | Was I dreaming, or maybe it was real, —

Back in the old times, before we took up Christianty, we believed in shamanism and also used to have a shaman. For more info on our mythology and shamanism, follow the links below. Now check out this shaman’s ritual for the Holy Crown of Hungary. The woman is singing an old Hungarian folk song.
